Sinful Sunday Does Breast Cancer Awareness

21st September 2012

As I mentioned in my round-up this week Sinful Sunday is joining forces with RSVP Erotica to highlight their work on raising cancer awareness. When Well Behaved Lady (AKA Wubble), who owns and runs the site contacted me and asked me if I would like to join forces with her for Breast Cancer awareness month and run a special Sinful Sunday competition and of course I jumped at the chance. I am pretty sure that everybody knows somebody who life has been affected by cancer in some form of other and why shouldn’t we all enjoy getting a bit naked or a bit sexy to highlight this great cause.

I will let Wubble herself explain more about her project….

My name is Wubble, for those who are not familiar with my website RSVP EROTICA. I contacted Molly with an idea, in the hope of taking my Breast Cancer Awareness campaign for 2012 in a different direction, Just as words can say so much, an image can speak volumes too! In collaboration with the very successful Sinful Sunday meme I hope the ‘Get Positively Pink’ campaign will bring awareness to a wider audience.

A different direction? This is my third year aiming to raise breast cancer awareness through poetry, what started out as a page on the main website, has now grown to have it’s own subdomain. If just one person reads this! While setting up the subdomain I realised I could do more than the October drive for awareness, after all there are so many types of cancer. I do realise some may not understand my reasoning behind raising cancer awareness through erotica. What does erotica have to do with cancer? My answer is simply this, Why not?

How did this all come about? “If just one person could hear my words about how I ignored the signs of my bowel cancer….” these words were spoken to me a few years ago, on line by a man I briefly spoke with, ordinarily in a sex chat room I wouldn’t have entertained a stranger just messaging me without prior exchanges in the public chat. This guy wasn’t looking for sex, he was just looking to chat about life, what the weather was like, what job did I do, just everyday normal conversation. He was in a hospice waiting to die from bowel cancer. Speaking with him had a profound effect on me, what followed on from that conversation has now become a major project for me.

Of course when I mentioned this idea to my wonderful judging partner Kerry Stott she literally bounced up and down with excitement as this is a cause which is extremely close to her heart…. or maybe I should say boobies and she is here to explain why….
“Having cancer isn’t like breaking a leg. A broken leg heals in 6-8 week, 12 if you are unlucky. Cancer, the diagnosis of cancer, the treatment of cancer and the fear of cancer can be life long; it is certainly life changing. Breast cancer is thought to be a woman’s disease but men can get it too and so checking your breasts or chest is so important for a good outcome. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32. I can safely say that I was blown away, at that time I didn’t know anyone who was younger than me who had the same diagnosis, unfortunately now I do.

Never one for moping around I wrote a book designed for everyone affected by breast cancer (here is the link if you want a sneaky peek  Double Decker Bus) all the stuff I had read was either very technical, for older women, or ‘inspirational’; none of which I wanted to read. So I wrote a book that is snappy, funny, doesn’t dumb things down but doesn’t get bogged down in the emotional detritus either. The short chapters are written so you can read a bit, put it down and go back to it later without it losing the flow.

From that book I got offered the chance to host my own radio show and Molly was a guest. I promote self examination for breast cancer awareness as much as I can so when I was asked to be involved with this project I jumped at the chance. I am always looking for new ways to raise awareness so that people remember about breast cancer but in a way that is not doom and gloom. Awareness through erotica is a sparkling idea, who wouldn’t want to be involved?”

Can you see now why I just couldn’t say no to this idea?

So here is how things are going to work for this competition…

I will be supporting this and joining in with this themed competition on the 7th October.

Cancer is very close to my heart, not from personal experience, but from close relatives and friends, one very very close relative is still on post cancer 3 monthly checks having survived an operation to remove a large tumor last year.

“I’ve Pimped The Cause” is now on my regular read list.

Having both had cancer myself, and just lost a loved one to secondary breast cancer, I’m glad to see such a thoughtful theme x

I grew up watching a parent take every bit of cancer treatment offered to them, this lasted for eight years before no more could be done. Regular breast examinations and just learning the symptoms is so simple and So worth your time when you know what the worst case scenario can be.

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s Positively Pink entries on the 7th 🙂 xx
